Style:
Nicolaas Bollen uses
a style which he named “sur-momentism” or “behind the moment”. Nicolaas
sees himself as the vehicle through which creative energy manifests itself from
behind the moment to transcend the “now” moment.
Nicolaas describes
sur-momentism as an intuitive way of translating reality through an abstract,
modernistic eye. He sees the bold strokes as expressions of the music that
weaves life together.
Technique:
Nicolaas Bollen
approaches his canvas with a wide variety of techniques. He employs brushes,
fingers, rollers, as well as the palette knife as tools to apply acrylic and oil
media. He mixes his own combinations of colors into a rich sculptural surface
texture. This texture reveals many aspects in different light levels and
perspectives. He handcrafts his own three-dimensional modernistic frames for his
paintings. The scale of his paintings varies from intimate to large.

Life
Treks:
Nicolaas was born in
his grandparent’s hotel to his Dutch parents in Padang, Indonesia. He lived
for eight years in the lush and sensual jungles of the Indonesian islands of
Sumatra and Java. In 1956, Nicolaas moved to a different continent. In Holland
he experienced a dense, cozy, people-made environment, also shaped by the sea.
At 18, he changed continents again by moving to Los Angeles where he studied
Architecture for 2 years. From 1969 until 1972 he studied Architecture and Art
at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Nicolaas moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in
1979. He and his wife crafted a “Dutch Gothic Hogan” home, where they raise
a family. With his family he explores the Santa-Fe wilderness and the Western
United States. He synthesizes these experiences into his sur-momentism creations.
